The University of Ibadan has, since the appointment of Professor Kenneth Onwuka Dike as its first Nigerian Vice-Chancellor in 1960, been led by a succession of distinguished scholars and administrators whose visionary leadership has shaped its growth and sustained its position as Nigeria's premier university.

As earlier reported by Peoples Conscience, the Governing Council of the University of Ibadan, under the chairmanship of Chief Bisi Akande, on 22 July 2026 announced the appointment of Professor Peter Olamakinde Olapegba as the 14th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University. His appointment followed a rigorous and transparent selection process involving eight candidates and takes effect from 1 November 2026, upon the expiration of the tenure of the incumbent Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode Oyebode Adebowale. Professor Olapegba thus becomes the 14th substantive Vice-Chancellor in the University's history, ushering in a new chapter in the leadership of Nigeria's premier university.
