Member representing Ibarapa Central and Ibarapa North Federal Constituency, Hon. Dr. Anthony Adebayo Adepoju, has described the appointment of Prof. Peter Olamakinde Olapegba as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan as a proof of Ibarapa’s enduring legacy of excellence.
Adepoju, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hassan Adesodi Olaoniye, in Ibadan on Wednesday, said the appointment of the Igbo-Ora-born scholar was a source of pride to the people of Ibarapa and a reflection of the region’s rich intellectual heritage.
The federal lawmaker said Olapegba’s emergence as the Vice-Chancellor of Nigeria’s premier university and one of Africa’s foremost institutions was a responsibility of great honour and significance.
He noted that sons and daughters of Ibarapa had consistently distinguished themselves whenever entrusted with leadership positions in both the public and private sectors, adding that the latest appointment affirmed the region’s reputation for producing exceptional leaders.
Adepoju recalled that another indigene of Ibarapa was recently appointed the Head of Service of Oyo State, describing the development as evidence of the geopolitical area’s continued contribution to national development.
He urged young people in the region to remain committed to hard work, academic excellence and personal development, saying they should draw inspiration from accomplished indigenes who had risen to national prominence through diligence and perseverance.
The lawmaker congratulated Prof. Peter Olapegba on his appointment and called on the university community, stakeholders and the people of Ibarapa to support him with prayers and cooperation for a successful tenure.
He expressed confidence that the new Vice-Chancellor would provide visionary leadership for the University of Ibadan.
“This is an achievement we cannot celebrate enough. I understand what it means to lead Nigeria’s first university and one of Africa’s most prestigious institutions. As the son of a former Rector, I understand the responsibilities that come with such an office.
“I therefore call on all sons and daughters of Ibarapa to unite in prayers and support for our kinsman as he embarks on this important national assignment.
“This is indeed a proud moment for our region. I believe this appointment will strengthen Ibarapa’s legacy of excellence and inspire future generations to strive for greatness,” Adepoju said.
