Meet a Rare Five-Generation Family in Ibarapa

In Africa and most parts of the world, three-generation families are common, while four-generation families occur only in rare cases. However, the Sunday Abegunde family in Idere, Ibarapa Central Local Government Area of Oyo State has achieved an exceptional milestone by having five living generations in one direct family line.

Madam Kikelomo, a centenarian great-great-grandmother, is still in excellent health. She is blessed with a daughter, granddaughter, great-granddaughter and great-great-granddaughter.

During the week, Peoples Conscience correspondent engaged this remarkable family at the popular Apaana Compound in Idere, where they acknowledged the blessing of longevity that runs through their lineage, as members of the family are known to often live beyond 100 years.

Speaking with Mrs. Folake Alabi, the granddaughter of Mama Kikelomo Abegunde, she noted that her daughter has also given birth, continuing the line of generations in the family. She said what is happening in her family is a blessing that cannot easily be explained.

“Look at my grandmother, she is still very active at over 100 years. Her age was estimated based on when her daughter, my mother, got married. My mother is now over 70 years old. Based on available records, my mother often says her own mother married quite late. My grandmother’s recollection of events that happened over 100 years ago in our community, such as the construction of Methodist Church building, also supports the authenticity of her age and other historical accounts,” she said.

The five living generations in one direct family line, as shown in the picture, include: Madam Kikelomo Abegunde (great-great-grandmother, fifth generation), Mrs. Foluke Oladosu (great-grandmother, fourth generation), Mrs. Folake Alabi (grandmother, third generation), Mrs. Deborah Oluwaleke (mother, second generation) and Bukola Bidemi (child, first generation).

Peoples Conscience will continue to document historical facts about Ibarapa, Nigeria, Africa and the world at large.
